Equipment

  • a large pot

  • a stove

  • a knife for chopping

  • a wooden spoon

Ingredients

  • 1 large onion, finely chopped

  • 4 cloves garlic, minced

  • 2 cans (28 ounces each) crushed tomatoes

  • 1/2 cup red wine (optional)

  • 1 teaspoon dried basil

  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

  • 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

  • Freshly chopped parsley for garnish

Instructions

1

Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add onions and cook until translucent.

2

Add the minced garlic and cook until fragrant.

3

Pour in the red wine (if using) and let it reduce by half.

4

Add crushed tomatoes, basil, oregano, salt, and red pepper flakes.

5

Reduce heat to low, cover the pot, and let it simmer for at least 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.

6

Taste and adjust seasoning as needed. Let the sauce cool before serving or storing.

Notes

To enhance your sauce-making experience, consider these tips: sauté your onions until they're translucent for a sweeter, milder flavor. Adding red wine can deepen the flavor profile, but remember to let it cook off to avoid a raw wine taste. Simmering your sauce on low heat for an extended period will meld the flavors together. Finally, taste your sauce as it cooks and adjust seasonings as needed; remember, this is your creation!
