Equipment

  • Large pot

  • Wooden spoon

  • Knife

  • Cutting board

  • Measuring cups and spoons

Ingredients

  • 500g ground beef (preferably 80% lean, 20% fat)

  • 1 large onion, finely chopped

  • 2 carrots, diced

  • 2 celery stalks, diced

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 can (400g) crushed tomatoes

  • 1 cup beef stock

  • 1/4 cup milk

  • 1/4 cup red wine (optional)

  • Salt and pepper to taste

  • 1 teaspoon dried basil

  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano

  • Fresh parsley for garnish

  • Olive oil for frying

Instructions

1

Heat a large pot over medium heat and add olive oil.

2

Add onions, carrots, and celery. Cook until softened, about 8-10 minutes.

3

Add garlic and cook for another 2 minutes.

4

Increase the heat to high, add the ground beef, and cook until browned.

5

Add wine (if using) and cook until reduced by half.

6

Add crushed tomatoes, beef stock, basil, oregano, salt, and pepper.

7

Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low, and let it simmer for at least 2 hours.

8

Stir in milk and cook for an additional 10 minutes.

9

Taste and adjust seasoning as needed.

10

Serve over your favorite pasta and garnish with fresh parsley.

Notes

Using high-quality ingredients is key. Opt for fresh vegetables and good quality ground beef. The addition of milk helps in tenderizing the meat. If you wish to add wine, choose a dry red wine to enhance the flavor. To achieve a rich flavor, let the sauce simmer for at least 2 hours; the longer it simmers, the better the flavors meld together. Don't shy away from seasoning; taste and adjust accordingly. Freezing in batches is also a great way to have a homemade meal ready in no time.
