Ground turkey chili is a beloved dish for several reasons. Firstly, it’s versatile – you can easily swap ingredients based on preferences or what’s available. Secondly, it’s a one-pot dish, which means minimal cleanup. This dish is also economical, allowing for large portions without breaking the bank. Moreover, chili tastes even better the next day, making it a fantastic option for meal planning. Lastly, it’s a comfort food that’s adaptable to various cuisines by tweaking the spices.

Why Is This Recipe Healthy?

As a dietitian and health professional, I can attest that ground turkey chili is nutritious. Ground turkey is a lean meat, which is lower in saturated fat compared to red meat. • Measuring spoons

  • Can opener

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground turkey

  • 1 large onion, chopped

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 bell pepper, chopped

  • 1 can (15 oz) kidney beans, drained and rinsed

  • 1 can (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes

  • 2 tablespoons chili powder

  • 1 teaspoon cumin

  • Salt and pepper to taste

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

  • Optional toppings: sour cream, shredded cheese, chopped cilantro, green onions.

Instructions

1

In a large pot, heat olive oil over medium heat.

2

Add the onions and garlic, sauté until they are soft, about 5 minutes.

3

Add the ground turkey and cook until browned.

4

Add bell pepper, chili powder, cumin, salt, and pepper. Cook for another 5 minutes.

5

Add beans and tomatoes, bring to a boil.

6

Reduce heat and let it simmer for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.

7

Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary.

8

Serve hot with your choice of toppings.

Notes

Selecting quality ingredients is paramount. Use lean ground turkey for a less greasy chili. For the beans, you can use black, pinto, or even a mix. Fresh tomatoes can replace canned ones for a fresher taste. If you like it spicy, add some jalapeños or chipotle in adobo. Don't shy away from experimenting with spices - add a dash of cinnamon or cocoa powder for a unique twist.
