In the culinary world, few things are as satisfying and heartwarming as a well-made Philly Cheese Steak. This classic sandwich, hailing from the streets of Philadelphia, has garnered a loyal following not only in America but around the globe. Combining succulent strips of steak, caramelized onions, bell peppers, and a cascade of melted cheese enveloped in a soft hoagie roll, this dish is a symphony of flavors waiting to be explored.

Why Do People Love Cooking This Recipe?

The allure of the Philly Cheese Steak lies in its simplicity, versatility, and soul-satisfying taste. Its simple ingredients are readily available, and the cooking process is relatively quick, making it an ideal dish for both novices and experienced cooks. Moreover, the recipe allows for customization – one can experiment with different types of cheeses, meats, or add a personal twist with additional toppings. The sandwich’s comforting and hearty nature makes it perfect for any meal, and it’s a hit at social gatherings. Furthermore, it’s a wonderful way to repurpose leftover steak or roast, minimizing food waste.

Why Is This Recipe Healthy?

This recipe can be a wholesome meal when consumed mindfully. The ribeye steak is a good source of protein, iron, and vitamin B12, which are essential for muscle building and maintaining a healthy blood system. The onions and bell peppers contribute fiber, vitamin C, and antioxidants. Using olive oil instead of butter is a healthier option as it contains monounsaturated fats which are beneficial for heart health. To make it even healthier, opt for whole-grain hoagie rolls and consider using a smaller portion of cheese or a low-fat alternative.

Who Can Eat This Recipe?

This recipe is suitable for most individuals, including children and adults. However, those who are watching their calorie intake, have dietary restrictions such as lactose intolerance or are following a vegetarian or vegan diet may need to make modifications or opt for alternative recipes.

Equipment

  • Cast-iron skillet or alarge frying pan

  • A sharp knife

  • Cutting board

  • Spatula

  • Measuring spoons

Ingredients

  • 1 lb thinly sliced ribeye steak

  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced

  • 1 green bell pepper, thinly sliced

  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil

  • Salt and pepper to taste

  • 4 slices of provolone cheese

  • 4 hoagie rolls

Instructions

1

Start by preheating your cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat and adding olive oil.

2

Add the thinly sliced onions and bell pepper to the skillet. Cook until they’re caramelized and tender, then remove them from the skillet.

3

In the same skillet, add the thinly sliced steak. Season with salt and pepper.

4

Cook until the steak is browned and slightly crispy on the edges.

5

Lower the heat, and add the cooked onions and bell peppers back to the skillet with the steak. Place slices of provolone cheese over the top and let it melt.

6

Once the cheese is melted, use a spatula to scoop the mixture into the hoagie rolls. Serve hot.

Notes

Opt for a high-quality cut of beef, such as ribeye, for maximum flavor and tenderness. Freeze the steak for about 30 minutes before slicing; this makes it easier to achieve thin slices. Use a cast-iron skillet to cook the steak; it provides even heating and enhances the flavors. When assembling, layer the cheese between some of the hot ingredients so it melts perfectly.
